Welcome to the mountain top.

Hoch Sernau

Phase 1 - Summer 2023

Phase 2 - Summer 2024

a FLAGSHIP FOR AUSTRIAN WINEMAKING

A Symbol of a Family's Bond to STYRIAN ROOTS

The form of the new Domaine Wolf is an innovation. It the result of years of design, redesign, engineering and construction - leveraging the talents of local architects, winemakers, craftspeople and builders.

Based on guidelines from Familie Wolf and with direct input from our small team of elite winemakers the winery is designed by local architect Alberto von Bach and it’s construction has been executed by local firm Partl Bau.

Planned and executed during the Coronavirus crisis the construction reflects the family and teams’s profound respect for their unique land and a drive to support the community. It also reflects an explicit desire to contribute to the rich heritage of Austrian winemaking and create something special for the generations to come.

We have enlarged and redesigned the cellar to ensure that we are able to fully support our own uncompromising production needs whilst also ensuring we have space to share with partners and neighbours. We have manage to introduce thousands of square meters of additional state of the art capacity while sensitively ensuring that the envelope of the building’s understories ultimately work within, rather than against, the unique shape and curves of the existing hillside. Above the ground floor the buildings will match, as far as practicable, the existing traditional volumes that were on site when we inherited the property. Above ground we are also working hard to reinvigorate our regions traditional and minimal material pallet - terracotta, weathered wood, lime-wash, and glass. With the an eye to the future we have worked to ensure that our facility is able to be sustainably powered.

The Hoch Sernau project is a tribute not only to the profound beauty of the Styrian landscape but also a considerable contribution to the lineage of Austrian vineyards and winemaking which has, in this place, existed for almost a millennia.

AN INVESTMENT IN OUR REGIONAL COMMUNITY

Conscious of the largely unprecedented scale of our commitment a particular focus for us has been on people.

We have made it our task to ensure that all partners working for us share our values of ecological responsibility, community commitment, honesty, integrity and reliability.

We are proud that, through directly supporting existing partners at Partl construction, Albertoni Architecture°Design as well as our team of local winemakers our activity has created and underwritten jobs throughout the region at a critical time.

A GLOBAL Window inTO the SUDSTEIERMARK

The winery overlooks the magnificent Styrian countryside from a terrace surrounded by vineyards planted with some of Styria’s most typical grapes.

From our renewed hospitality and sales areas (both above ground and in our cellars) Domaine Wolf plans on continuing our international out reach - introducing both international and domestic guests alike to some of the very best that Austria has to offer through a program of personalised tastings, special events, fine dining and more.

With an explicit brand focus on growing an international export market for Austrian wine we hope to use our platform to empower the Südsteiermark to embrace the wine world.

In our gastronomic programme we plan to tastings to pair our wine with special Austrian produce has to offer - whether that be fantastic bread, exceptional cheese, sustainably sourced meats or unique seafood.

We are constantly actively scouting suppliers and throughout 2022/23 we welcome expressions of interest from Austrian small/medium sized businesses who make unique and truly exceptional products.

Please note that due to the humbling volume of submissions we are currently receiving we are unable to reply to every expression of interest.

This building puts Austrian winemaking first.

Our state-of-the-art cellar is been designed in consultation with our team of winemakers and vineyard managers in Burgenland and Styria. It’s sensuous curves mirror the contours of the landscape in which it is embeded. Our exceptional barrel cellars will store Austrian wine in industry—gold-standard barrels in an exceptional format lit by innovative Styrian lighting company XAL.

Working with local and national suppliers - we are planning all new and top-of-the-line cellar technologies. This is a temple dedicated to the ancient ritual of winemaking that at the same time is a production facility which is able to exceed exceptionally high quality standards and grow overtime. This is a cellar not just for now but for all time.

A WORLD CLASS CELLAR

SUSTAINABILITY AS STANDARD.

truLY sustainabLE.

Starting with an easily-scalable solar garden, a solid biomass heating system and the impending installation of a revolutionary organic solid flow battery system and our new cellar takes energy independence and climate responsibility as its point of departure.

When it came to batteries in particular, we wanted to find a scalable industrial energy storage solution that did minimal to harm people and nature which could grow with us. The majority of technologies commercially available seemed based on technologies that used scarce resources, extracted under ethically and ecologically questionable conditions (with high energy consumption), are then transported around the world via long supply chains and ultimately are basically non-repairable/recyclable. It was clear to us that just having a solar panels and battery did not really make us either sustainable or ethical.

We hope to acquire a CMBlu Organic Solid-Flow Battery. – The liquid battery technology is based on fully recyclable organic materials that are available all over the world. Opposed to other battery types the aqueous electrolytes solutions used in the battery are non-flammable and ensure absolutely safe and reliable operation. Compared to previously established battery systems, organic solid-flow batteries are characterised by free scalability between power and capacity. This means the system can grow with us. What's more all our battery components they fully recyclable. This means we have the potential to be completely sustainable in our power supply - forever.
